Calder Guaranteed 500,000 Pick 5
Race 8
The Turf Sprint
The problem for dead closers in turf sprints with big fields, as #10 Testify can testify, is the need to go wide to win. He's tough to leave out, as he's been consistent this year, but you have to worry about a few others getting 1st run on the speed. Petrina Above, Abderian and Nuclear Debate will all be coming from off the pace and have the class to win. If Testify has to go 7-8 wide, which has become commonplace for him, any one of those can win.
#6 Take Achance On Me seems to be the best of the front end types, and lands a cozy post. Will use and hope his speed can hold.
Unwilling to go 5 deep in this, the opening leg, we'll stick to Tetsify and Take Achance on me.
Race 9
The Azalea BC
Storm Flag looks like a great bet against here. She's lightly raced, freaked in her latest with a 105 Beyer, and will be on everybody's Pick 5 ticket. Crafty Brat has beaten her twice in two starts, and can be part of a nice exacta should Storm run out.
I'll key the class of the field, #6 Buffythe centerfold in this spot. Her works are sharp, and should work out a great trip tracking the leaders. Santa Cantarina, Composure, Storm Flag Flying...she should find this spot a wee bit easier.
Race 10
The Carry Back
Using the only 3 Graded Stakes winners in the field.
#2 Roll Hennessey Roll: off the Turf angle.
#3 Halo Homewrecker: no Posse or Midas Eyes here.
#10 Valid Video: sharp works for Manning, who's pointed to this spot.
Race 11
The Princess Rooney
Going 3 deep in this spot. Two are obvious.
I'd give #3 Gold Mover a slight edge over #2 Harmony Lodge based on his local success, but they have taken turns beating each other and neither are ultra consistent. For that reason, I'm using #1 Miss Lodi at a price. She's back to her distance, and had a great looking breeze on 7/1 over the CD strip. Last start for her was a rare dull effort, but that will help the price.
Race 12
The Smile
Lake seems to hold the cards here with his former claimers, and though I'm not a Lake fan, I'm a Shake You Down believer after the True North on Belmont stakes day. Today, I'll use both his seperate entries, #13 Shake You Down and #3 My Cousin Matt. Matt comes off a comebacker after a Dubai trip where he showed surprising speed at Suffolk. Good effort there should have him ready.
The horse I believe can upset is #2 Here's Zealous. 6 steady works since the Bold Ruler. 10 horses inside of Shake You Down and that one spots him 6 pounds. Dutrow off the layoff.
To Recap:
$2 Pick 5 starting in Race 8
6,10/6/2,3,10/1,2,3/2,3,13
for $108
Good Luck to all today...
